6 Reasons Aussie Campers Are Getting Off the Ground for Good

It is not the camping that wears you out. It is everything you have to do before you can sleep.

You get to camp at four. You want a beer and a fire. Instead you walk the site looking for the one flat patch without rocks. You kick sticks out of the way. You peg out, you fight a pole, you blow up a mattress, and by the time it is done the light has gone and the fire has not been lit.

Then at 2am the ground pushes back through the mat, the cold comes up underneath you, and something crawls across the canvas near your head.

Here is the thing most people never question.

Almost every annoying part of a camping trip traces back to one decision. You are sleeping on the ground.

Change that one thing and the rest of the trip changes with it.

Reason #1

You get your first hour back

Count what setup actually costs you. Finding the flat spot. Clearing it. Pegs. Poles. Pumping up a mattress while your mate holds a torch. A hard shell rooftop tent opens off the roof. Unlatch it, lift it, and the mattress is already up there. No flat spot, no pegs, no pump.

That first hour is the difference between arriving and setting up, or arriving and sitting down. It is also why a Friday night trip is suddenly worth it again.

Reason #2

You actually sleep

A swag is fine when you are 25 and it is one night. Do three nights on the ground and your hips tell you about it for a week. Off the ground you are on a real mattress, on a flat solid base, with no cold seeping up from the dirt and no root under your shoulder. No ants finding the zip.

The difference shows up the next day. You drive better, you fish longer, and nobody in the car is short with anybody.

Reason #3

Rain stops being the end of the trip

You know the call. It is Thursday, the forecast turns, and someone says maybe we leave it this time. On the ground rain means water tracking under the floor, a wet tent packed away wet, and a garage that smells like mould on Tuesday. Up top you are above the puddles. Heavy poly cotton canvas and a rainfly keep the weather out, and a hard shell closes dry.

The result is simple. You stop cancelling. Trips happen even when the sky looks average.

Reason #4

Camp where the view is, not where the ground is flat

Ground tents need flat, clear and dry. That rules out a lot of the best spots in this country. Rocky headlands. Slopes above the river. Sand. With the tent on the roof, the vehicle is the site. Pull up, level it roughly, open the tent. If the weather turns or the spot is busy, you close it and drive ten minutes down the track. Try that with everything pegged out.

This is what people mean when they say they camp more after they switch. Not because the gear is exciting, but because there are suddenly more places to stop.

Reason #5

Not every rooftop tent fixes this

Here is the catch. Most rooftop tents still make you pull the bedding out to close them. The doona ends up on the bonnet anyway. The OT X Plus was built around that one problem. The X hinge changes the shape of the shell, so it closes with your bedding still inside. Unlatch, lift, sleep. Latch, drive.

Honest bit. It costs more than a swag, and you need a rack or canopy that can carry 99kg (1.4 size). But if the choice is a setup you use twice a year or one that gets you out most months, the cheap one is not cheaper.

Reason #6

Built by three tradies who camp the same tracks you do

Outback Tourer has been building rooftop tents in Brisbane since 2021, started by three tradies who camp the same tracks their customers do. Customers describe the same switch again and again. One retired her swag after a lot of hesitating and called the rooftop tent the best decision she had made, mostly because setup and pack down got so much easier.

You can pick up in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, and the team answers fitment questions seven days a week, including the ones where the answer is that your rack will not do the job.
