6 ReasonsAussie Tourers are Replacing Their Old Rooftop Tent With the OT X Plus
You already know rooftop camping beats the ground. No mud. No snakes. No pumping up a mattress at 9pm.
But if you have owned a rooftop tent for a season or two, you also know the other side. Pulling the bedding out every time you pack down. Wiping wet canvas off the walls at 6am. Turning sideways to get changed. Running a cable across the swag to charge a phone.
None of that is camping. All of it is design.
Three tradies in Brisbane spent five years fixing exactly that, and the OT X Plus is what came out. Here is what actually changed.
Your bedding stays in the tent. Every single time.
The worst part of pack down was never the tent. It was the pile on the bonnet. Doona, pillows, the kid's blanket, all of it out, all of it back in at the next camp. The X hinge changes the shape of the shell, so the tent closes with your bedding still inside. You pull the handle, latch it, drive. The bed you slept in last night is the bed waiting for you tonight.
Vicente, who has owned other brands, said it's "so much easier to pack away compared to other brands I've owned."
You wake up dry, not under a wet ceiling.
Two people breathing in a sealed box all night has to go somewhere. In most tents it goes onto the walls, and you find out at first light when your sleeping bag is damp against the canvas. The X Plus uses 380gsm ripstop poly cotton that is genuinely tested and not PU coated, so the canvas can breathe instead of sweating.
A 15mm mesh mat sits under the mattress and insulates the aluminium base, and a head space window lets the breeze cross both ways. You get up, roll the bed away, and there is nothing to dry out before you leave.
Thirty percent more room, so two adults stop taking turns.
Anyone who has shared a rooftop tent knows the routine. One person lies flat while the other gets dressed, because there is only room for one set of elbows. The extra front assembly bar opens the interior up by 30 percent. A 135 x 200cm memory foam mattress, 7.5cm thick, sits under a 360 degree dimmable LED strip. Entry hooks on all three sides mean nobody has to climb over anybody.
One owner said the thing that surprised him most was waking up in the dark, because it blacks out completely. His words: 10 out of 10.
Power on the roof, not another box in the tub.
Most people solve power after they buy the tent. A panel, a bracket, a regulator, a cable through a door seal, another thing to pack. The X Plus ships with a 230W (1.4 size) monocrystalline panel already mounted, laser cut stainless brackets, a pre wired Anderson plug underneath, and a 12V socket plus USB and USB C inside the tent. The panel itself carries a 10 year warranty. German engineered Stabilis gas struts are rated to carry the solar and the racks, so none of it is an afterthought bolted onto a shell that was never built for it.
Cargo rails on top take another 30kg of recovery gear. Your tub stays free for the fridge.
It is built for corrugations, not for a showroom
Anyone can make a tent that looks good parked at a caravan park. The real test is how it holds up season after season on Aussie tracks. Insulated aluminium shell and base. Over centre latches that close smooth instead of fighting you. A wide black step ladder. Midge proof mesh, not the standard stuff that lets the small ones through. It mounts to fibreglass and alloy canopies, roof bars, Kings, Ocam, Yakima, Front Runner, ARB base racks and Rhino racks with minor modification.
It weighs 99kg (1.4 size) and it is not the cheapest hard shell you can buy in Australia. But you are buying the tent you keep, not the one you resell after two seasons and replace with this one anyway.
The people who own it are not quiet about it.
Every review on the X Plus so far is five stars. Not 'good for the money' reviews. Owners write things like 'absolutely amazing build quality', 'so much room' and '10 out of 10 on design, service and build'.
